Foot Arthritis

Arthritis is a broad medical term encompassing various conditions afflicting the joints. Foot arthritis, which can be painful and disrupt one's active lifestyle, refers to the inflammation and degeneration of the joints in the foot. If you experience foot pain or discomfort, Dr. LaWanda Bailey-Rayner of Foot Care Specialists in Holly Springs, serving Fuquay-Varina, NC, is available to develop a customized podiatric treatment plan to best manage inflammation and symptoms associated with foot arthritis.

Foot Arthritis Symptoms

The symptoms common with this condition include one or a combination of -

  • Pain/Discomfort.
  • Stiffness/Reduced range of motion.
  • Swelling.
  • Difficulty walking.
  • Finding it challenging to engage in activities that once caused no pain.

What Causes Foot Arthritis?

Arthritis can impact any part of the foot. Its most common causes include -

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of foot arthritis. OA happens when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones erodes naturally over time. It is most often seen in middle-aged and older adults. If the cartilage damage is caused by injury (not a function of time), it is considered Post-Traumatic Arthritis (PTA).
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis differs from OA in that it is an autoimmune condition in which the body's joints become inflamed. RA can cause painful symptoms. When left untreated, RA could impact the functioning of the affected joint.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis – this autoimmune condition impacts the skin and inflames any joint.
  • Gout happens from an excessive buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. Gout, which is most often felt in the big toe, can cause an unexpected and sudden attack that leads to swelling and intense pain.

Factors That May Contribute to the Development of Foot Arthritis

While most people experience arthritis, if only mild, the following factors may increase your risk of foot arthritis –

  • Genetics - Those with a family history often have a higher risk of developing arthritis.
  • Overuse - Activities like jumping, running, or occupations and hobbies that require extended walking or standing can cause repetitive stress that leads to foot arthritis.
  • Irregular Foot Mechanics/Structure —This causes excessive stress on the foot's joints, furthering the natural erosion of protective cartilage.
    • High Arches.
    • Misaligned Joints.
    • Flat Feet.
  • Obesity - Carrying excessive weight increases the stress on all the joints in the body.
